Drowning is the 3rd leading cause of unintentional-injury related deaths. An estimated 388,000 people die every year from drowning across the world. 96% of all drownings occur in lower and middle income countries. Drowning rates in Africa are 8 times higher than US or Australia. In Ghana, death by drowning is one of the major causes of accident-related death for 10-19 year olds, exceeding death from road traffic accidents. During the peak season an estimated four people die a day at our busiest beaches in Ghana. Felix Fitness Foundation has been working in conjunction with Ghana Education System, Reach for Change and RNLI – UK to educate over 15,000 children and embed drowning prevention in to the school curriculum.
